We have been learning about Samuel Champlain's and Pierre Degua, Sieur de Mons’ voyage to New France (Acadie). We explored the St. Croix Island Discovery Box and wrote down our predictions about the items contained within it. We also wrote down a list of things we think we know about this voyage and we will be checking to see if this previous knowledge is correct or not as we continue through our journey of discovery. In addition we learned more about Champlain and Degua's journey to St. Croix Island through reading David W. Hunt’s The Toy Cannon, a fictional historical narrative of cabin boy Andre Coulombe’s journal of his experiences on this journey to, and settlement of, St. Croix Island. After every reading we have written about what happened in each chapter through the eyes of one of the characters – writing journal entries as that particular character. We also made our own paper to use as a cover for these journals. Through creating our own paper we gained a sense of how long and difficult it was to create simple items that we take for granted today. This has helped us to understand that the explorers did not live easy lives.
We will now explore further to gain a better understanding of the lives and experiences of these voyageurs. This will be a fun journey of discovery. Make sure you bring along your sense of adventure! Let’s begin.
